A 5-step walkthrough for building a Spot UV varnish layer — the file structure that tells your printer exactly where to apply the glossy, raised finish.
Spot UV is a clear, glossy varnish applied only to specific parts of a printed piece — a logo, a border, a headline — so that element catches the light and stands slightly raised off the page while the rest of the surface stays matte. It’s the detail that makes a label or business card read as premium instead of ordinary.
The catch: your printer can’t “guess” where you want that gloss. They need a separate, dedicated layer in your file — filled solid black — that acts as a stencil. Wherever that layer is black, UV varnish gets applied. Wherever it’s empty, it doesn’t. Building that layer correctly is a five-step job.
⚫ Solid black is the standard convention for spot finishes — UV varnish, foil, embossing. It has nothing to do with the ink color of your design; it’s purely an instruction layer. Never use gradients, transparency, or anything less than 100% black fill on this layer — soft edges read as ambiguous to the printer and risk an uneven finish.
What you’ll need
- Adobe Illustrator, with your finished design open
- A clear idea of which elements should get the glossy finish — usually a logo, badge border, or key headline, not the whole label
- The Layers panel visible (Window → Layers)
1. Identify and select the elements you want glossy
Look at your finished artwork and decide which pieces should catch the light — typically a logo mark, a decorative border, or a headline, not the entire label. Select just those objects.
Being selective here matters: Spot UV reads as a premium accent because it’s used sparingly, not applied everywhere.

2. Create a new layer above your original artwork
In the Layers panel, add a new layer sitting above your existing artwork layer, and name it something unambiguous — Spot UV or UV works well. This keeps your instruction layer completely separate from your visible design, so it can’t accidentally get merged, recolored, or missed during file prep.Create a new layer above your original artwork

3. Copy your selected elements onto the new layer
With your gloss elements still selected from step 1, copy them (Cmd/Ctrl+C), select the new UV layer, and paste in place (Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+V in Illustrator pastes at the exact same position rather than the center of your view).
You’ll now have a duplicate set of shapes sitting on their own layer, stacked exactly on top of the originals.

4. Fill the pasted shapes 100% solid black
Select everything on the UV layer and set the fill to pure black — no tints, no gradients, no transparency. This solid black shape is what your printer’s equipment reads as “apply UV varnish here.” Anything less than full opacity risks an inconsistent, patchy finish on press.
Why a separate layer instead of just marking the original artwork? Printers strip out this layer to drive the UV coating unit — it needs to be isolated and disposable, not tangled into your visible design layers.
5. Toggle the artwork layer off to check your mask
Hide your original artwork layer in the Layers panel and look at what’s left. You should see a clean, high-contrast black silhouette of exactly the elements you want glossy — nothing more, nothing less. If any shape looks incomplete or misaligned, fix it now, while it’s isolated and easy to see.

Quick recap
- Select the specific elements you want glossy — not the whole design
- Create a new layer above your artwork, named clearly (e.g.
Spot UV) - Copy your selected shapes and paste them in place on the new layer
- Fill those shapes 100% solid black — no gradients, no transparency
- Hide the artwork layer and confirm the black mask alone looks correct
