How to Create a Print Safe Zone in Adobe Illustrator

Keep your text and logos from getting trimmed off. A five-minute Illustrator setup using Offset Path that gives you a visual guide for every label you design.

Every label gets trimmed to its die line after printing, and small shifts in material feed or cutting alignment are normal. A safe zone is a guide line set inside your die line that shows you where it’s risky to place important text or logos — if it’s inside that line, it stays protected even if the cut shifts slightly.

Rule of thumb: anything that would look wrong if it got clipped — logos, addresses, barcodes, fine print — should sit fully inside the safe zone, not just inside the die line.

    What you’ll need

    • Adobe Illustrator with your label artwork open
    • A die line already placed on your file
    • About 5 minutes

    1. Select the die line and offset it inward

Click the die line to select it, then go to Object → Path → Offset Path. Enter a negative value (for example −0.0625″) so the new path sits inside the die line rather than outside it.

    2. Style the new path as your safe-zone guide

With the offset path selected, open the Stroke panel, set it to a dashed line, and give it a bright color like blue so it’s easy to spot against your artwork. This visually separates it from the die line and any trim marks.

    3. Put the guide on its own layer

Create a new layer above your artwork and move the dashed safe-zone path onto it. Keeping it separate means you can hide or lock the guide instantly without touching your actual design.

    4. Check that everything important stays inside the line

With the guide layer visible, scan your design — text, logos, barcodes, fine print — and confirm it all sits fully inside the blue dashed line. If something crosses it, nudge it inward before you export.

    Quick recap

    1. Select the die line, then Object → Path → Offset Path with a negative value
    2. Set the new path to a dashed, brightly colored stroke
    3. Move it to its own layer above the artwork
    4. Confirm all text and logos sit inside the line before exporting
